Japan to invest USD 34 billion in India, no nuke deal

Tokyo, Sep 1 (PTI): Japan today announced doubling of its private and public investment in India to about USD 34 billion over the next five years even as the two countries decided to elevate their ties to a Special Strategic Global Partnership but failed to conclude a civil nuclear deal.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe during their summit talks also reaffirmed the importance of bilateral defence relations in their strategic partnership and agreed on greater defence equipment and technology cooperation.

The summit meeting took place on the third day of Modi's five-day visit to Japan when the two countries also decided to expedite talks on sale of US-2 amphibian aircraft to India for enhancing maritime security.

At a joint press conference, Abe also announced that as an example of Indo-Japan cooperation, Tokyo will help India in providing financial, technical and operational support to introduce Bullet trains, a project that Modi has been actively pursuing.

Japan will also help India in providing better connectivity with its neighbours, he said.

On the civil nuclear deal, which was expected to be finalised during the visit, Abe said they have directed the officials to accelerate negotiations for early conclusion of an agreement to strengthen partnership.

While India is said to be pursuing the deal with Japan on the template of the landmark Indo-US nuclear accord, Tokyo is said to be not that enthusiastic about that being the basis.

The 3.5 trillion yen( 34 billion USD) of investment from Japan to India including Official Development Assositance(ODA) during a 5-year period will be under the aegis of India–Japan Investment Promotion Partnership for development of projects including infrastructure and building of smart cities.

The five-year period will also see the doubling of the presence of Japanese firms in India, Abe said.

Thanking Abe for providing him an opportunity to make Japan his first bilateral visit outside South Asia, Modi said," we both have decided to raise the relationship to a special strategic and global partnership by giving it a special emphasis".

Asserting that his visit ushered in a dawn of new era in Indo-Japan relations, Modi said there is no "limit" to partnership between the two countries.

But some politically motivated people are constantly criticizing him, trying relentlessly to somehow spread negativity and hoping that he fails.

Whichever is the Govt, when it does good, should be appreciated and when it is not doing good, criticized. This Japan agreement seems to be good for India and since Japan is a good and transparent country, even though strings may be attached, we can expect good things coming out.

On the other side, I hang my head in shame as an Indian. I have never realized, a Govt of a country which was boasting that Americans will come to India for work, will stoop so low as to sign an agreement of house maids in dotted lines on Saudi dictate. In one month, Saudi issued 200000 visas to Indians that includes 44000 maids, a record, though dubious. This has come in DW and other papers. Up to now, even during Vajpayee Govt, no woman below 45 was allowed to work as maid in GC. But now, on Saudi dictate, Sushma Swaraj has signed to send women between 25 and 45 to Saudi to work as house maids. See reports in papers.

Everyone knows that Arab women tell the maids to sleep with their husbands, when they are sick or not in mood. Agents have ben getting complaints. Many maids came back to India after becoming pregnant. Now with this 25 year women going there, Saudis need not go to Bangkok. No wonder, Modi said, he is Gujarathi, business and money is in his blood !

    Dear Santan,100% right.
We as citizens should appreciate all that is good and criticize all that is not in the interest.
About criticism of employing MAIDS in Gulf is even more meaningful.
It is REAL curse to our community in particular and Indian in general.
Married couple should live together and BRING UP children as marriage vow.
But due to Gulf job, mostly single parent has raised our children, which ruined many family lives, be children, Young Mother or Father. Father is rejected by Wife & Children when they retire and come back, real disaster.
Instead of ruining the family values, either both should work and stay together or live HERE with little with peace, values and respect.

mr santan and dsouza, what you said is true.i have also heard it.they do it for maids of all countries that include srilanka, philipines, indonesia, pak, bangladesh etc.they dont even spare maids from pak, bangla and treat them worse which these people term them as thier own.after knowing all these i urge people not to go as maids to these countries as these are not civilised and democratic countries and there is no term called human rights in thier dictionary.even in india most of the maids are not safe either(ex:shiney ahuja incident).
gulf countries are worst for menial jobs like housemaid.pak and bangaladesh are fit to occupy those jobs.india has today lot of garment factories and other blue collar jobs instead of doing jobs in countries called saudi arabia for house maid.
    thanks

It does not make difference. UN became spineless body due to 5 permanent members personal interest. Only one country realised this at beginning .
That is Switzerland. It joined to UN On September 10, 2002.

Secondly, building your Economy and Military power UN is NOT obstacle. Build your strongest economy along with Powerful military.
If we succeeding in this concept, forget China, even other permanent members also saluting India.
