Davis Cup: Weather is a concern, says Amritraj

Bangalore, Sep 7 (IANS): Indian team captain Anand Amritraj Sunday voiced concern over the match timings for the World Group Davis Cup playoff tie against Serbia here next weekend in view of the prevailing weather conditions.

As per the official programme, the matches commence at 3 p.m. Friday, the doubles from 6.30 p.m. Saturday and reverse singles at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Typically, the city experiences rain from late afternoon and the weather could play havoc with the playing schedule. Also, wet weather has been forecast for the next weekend.

"Yes, I am concerned with the weather conditions. In fact, it is raining heavily right now, I think. I would have preferred the traditional 11 a.m. start. I spoke with the ITF (International Tennis Federation) and the organisers, but I was informed that in view of the telecast commitments, the timings cannot be changed," Amritraj said at a media conference here.

Amritraj gave a thumbs-up for the newly-laid Rebound Ace surface, which he described as "medium fast" that would suit Indian singles players Somdev Devvarman and Yuki Bhambri.

"The surface is medium fast with bounce, and these conditions should suit both players (Devvarman and Bopanna)," he said.

Asked whether Bopanna and Leander Paes, whose participation was confirmed only Sunday, would be able to combine well as a doubles team since they have not played together for a while, Amritraj said both players were experienced enough to adjust.

"I know Leander and Rohan haven't played together, but they are both world-class players. It is a matter of communication and I am sure, they will sort it out," the captain said.
