Fiji PM lauds freed UN peacekeepers as heroes

Sydney, Sep 12 (IANS): The 45 Fijian UN peacekeepers, who were released by the Syrian rebels, are heroes whose actions have strengthened the Fiji's reputation in the international community, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said.

The prime minister said they have shown their discipline to the world and have maintained the respect and trust of the UN for their participation in present and future peacekeeping missions, Fijilive reported Friday.

"Because of their discipline, not one militant was killed and none of our soldiers were harmed. They upheld the integrity of UN peacekeeping and as a result have strengthened Fiji’s reputation in the international community," Bainimarama was quoted as saying.

He also reassured the UN of Fiji's continued participation in its peacekeeping missions.

The prime minister thanked all Fijians and the international community for their prayers and support during the ordeal.

The 45 soldiers were taken from their post on the Golan Heights Aug 28 by the Syrian rebel group, Nusra Front.
