Saradha scam: CBI arrests Assam singer Sadananda Gogoi

Kolkata, Sep 12 (IANS): The CBI Friday arrested Assamese singer and filmmaker Sadananda Gogoi in connection with the multi-crore-rupee Saradha scam in the West Bengal capital, an official said.

The singer, alleged to have made a TV commercial for the tainted Saradha Group, was one of the many high-profile names to feature in a letter written by scam kingpin Sudipta Sen to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

"Sadananda Gogoi of Assam has been arrested on allegations of conspiracy and misappropriation of funds. He will be presented in a Kolkata court Saturday," a CBI spokesperson told IANS.

Taking over the probe in West Bengal following a Supreme Court directive, the CBI so far has arrested four people -- East Bengal Football Club official Debabarata Sarkar, city businessman Sandhir Agarwal, former IPS officer Rajat Majumdar, and now Gogoi.

The Special Investigation Team of the West Bengal police arrested suspended Trinamool Congress parliamentarian Kunal Ghosh last year, the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) have interrogated a minister, several parliamentarians and close associates of powerful leaders of the party.
