22 Palestinians arrested on suspicion of rioting

Jerusalem, Sep 16 (IANS): Jerusalem police and border patrol officers have arrested 22 Palestinians on suspicion of rioting in east Jerusalem in recent days, Israeli police said in a statement Tuesday.

Among the detainees are 10 minors, who are suspected of throwing firebombs at the Abu Tor neighbourhood or at security forces in Silwan, Xinhua reported citing the statement.

Three of the suspects were allegedly involved in hurling stones at the city's Light Rail.

Violence in Jerusalem's Arab neighbourhoods has risen dramatically since the murder in late June of a 16-year-old Palestinian youth by an Israeli extremist, apparently in retribution for the abduction and killing of three Jewish teenagers in the West Bank that same month.

"The Jerusalem police will continue its decisive and uncompromising activity and will lay its hand on anyone involved in disorderly conduct in the city, and ensure that they are prosecuted to the full extent of the law," the statement read.
