Omar Abdullah visits flood-hit areas in Srinagar


Srinagar, Sep 17 (IANS): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Wednesday visited flood-hit areas of Srinagar to oversee the rescue and relief measures undertaken by the state administration.

An official statement issued here said the chief minister directed officers to ensure that dewatering of the inundated areas in done on war footing so that people living in these areas resume their day-to-day life.

He also asked for providing potable drinking water, adequate electric supply, free ration besides giving adequate and necessary medicare facilities to the affected people to check the threat of an epidemic.

The areas Abdullah visited included Sonawar, Pathrathan, Panthachowk, Nowgam, Natipora, Rajbagh, Sanat Nagar and Rambagh. Besides, he conducted an aerial survey of Bemina, Batmaloo, Lal Chowk, Abi Guzar, Barbarshah, Maisuma, Khayam, Qamarwari and Parimpora.

"While listening to the grievances of people in different localities, the chief minister assured them that the state government has already instructed the revenue officers to prepare a comprehensive and detailed report about the extent of damage suffered by the people so that they can be adequately compensated.

"He also told them that to control the possible spread of any disease associated with floods, the necessary medical precautions have already been taken," the statement said.

The chief minister also maintained that the Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution department has also been instructed to provide free ration to the affected people for a period of six months and trucks load of other essential supplies has also been dispatched and distributed in the affected localities.
