Indian origin man chases robber in New Zealand

Wellington, Sep 18 (IANS): An Indian-origin man chased a robber in New Zealand when he tried to rob him at knife point, media reported Thursday.

A man walked into the Raleigh St Dairy, owned by Pran Sharma and tried to rob him at knife point in Taranaki, the Taranaki Daily News reported Thursday.

The man pointed a knife at the dairy owner and demanded money and cigarettes.

In retaliation, Sharma hit the man with an electric kettle and, when he moved backwards, grabbed a jar of lollies and whacked him again.

"I was not scared. I tried to grab the knife," Sharma said.

"He was lucky to escape. I was really angry," added Sharma.

The exchange lasted less than a minute.

Sharma chased the robber across the road, yelling at him to stop and come back. But the man disappeared up a side street.

Sharma has owned the dairy for more than two years.
