Sri Lankan man faces trial for blackmailing Indian woman

Dubai, Sep 18 (IANS): A swimming trainer is facing trial in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for taking nude photos of an Indian woman and blackmailing her for money, a media report said Thursday.

The Dubai Criminal Court heard Thursday that a Sri Lankan national, identified only as A.L., 34, was in a romantic relationship with the Indian woman, identified only as M.R., 23, The National reported.

The accused, who worked as a swimming trainer, confessed that he kept photos of the woman on his phone and sent them to her family.

Prosecutors said A.L. had taken several pictures of his lover M.R. during their time together and charged him for taking naked pictures and exchanging them through social media.

The swimming trainer was also charged for demanding 10,000 dirhams ($2,722) in return for not sending the photos to the victim's family.

"He used his iPhone 5 to take the pictures then took my uncle's Facebook account name and, when I broke up with him, he sent the pictures to my uncle," the report quoted the woman as saying.

She said her ex-lover sent the images after demanding cash, also sent them to her sister via the WhatsApp messaging service.

The case will be next heard later this month.
