NHRC notice to Uttarakhand over students wearing helmets in classroom

New Delhi, 18th Sept (IANS): The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Thursday asked a report from the Uttarakhand government about school children wearing helmets in a classroom at Doodhli village, 25 km away from state capital Dehradun, to protect themselves from falling plaster off the ceiling.

"Notices have been issued to the Secretary (Education), Uttarakhand, and District Magistrate, Dehradun, calling for a factual report within two weeks," an NHRC official said.

"The students were forced to wear helmets in their classes in order to protect themselves from the falling plaster off the roof of a dilapidated school building," he added.

Many students were reportedly injured when plaster had fallen off on them from the roof. Therefore, the parents provided helmets to their wards.
