Brazil, Colombia rise in FIFA rankings


Rio de Janeiro, Sep 19 (IANS) Brazil has overtaken Uruguay to move to the sixth spot in the latest FIFA rankings.

The Selecao's rise follows 1-0 victories over Colombia and Ecuador in the United States earlier this month, reports Xinhua.

Despite the loss to their regional rivals, Colombia jumped one spot to third, equalling their highest ranking.

Germany, who won the World Cup final in July, lead the standings followed by tournament runners up Argentina.

According to the announcement Thursday, the Netherlands dropped one spot to fourth and Belgium remained fifth.

African leaders Algeria were the biggest movers in the top 20 - rising four places to 20th - while Croatia slipped three rungs to 19th.

New Zealand (118th) were the highest ranked team in Oceania while Iran (44th) headed Asia.
