Threats won't work, Naidu tells Ajit Singh

New Delhi, Sep 19 (IANS): Union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu Friday said RLD leader Ajit Singh's "threats" on being asked to vacate his government bungalow here "won't work".

"Threats won't work," Naidu told reporters here without directly naming Ajit Singh.

He said there was no question of political vendetta against Ajit Singh, former civil aviation minister in the Manmohan Singh cabinet.

The Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) workers are demanding that Ajit Singh's bungalow be declared the Chaudhary Charan Singh Memorial Centre like the bungalows of late prime minister Indira Gandhi and leaders Lal Bahadur Shastri, Kanshi Ram and Jagjivan Ram were.

About 200 farmers and policemen were injured Thursday in clashes between police and the RLD and Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU).

The farmers were demonstrating against the water and power supply being snapped at the 12, Tughlak Road residence of Ajit Singh to force him to leave the government bungalow.

On Friday, Singh visited his party workers who were injured in the clashes.

He arrived at the Yashoda Hospital in Ghaziabad around 11 a.m. where Modi Nagar legislator Sudesh Sharma and Khair legislator Bhagwati Prasad were being treated along with other party workers.

He spoke to the doctors and enquired about the health of the injured.

Speaking to media persons outside the hospital, Ajit Singh termed police action on the peaceful agitators as barbaric.

He criticised the central government for being adamant in not accepting the demand to make the bungalow where former prime minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, his father, lived for a long time a memorial.

He said the bungalow remained the centre of farmers' politics where farmers organisations from across the country met regularly.

Ajit Singh lost the Lok Sabha elections in April-May this year.
