Mangalore, Sep 29: A housewife from Jannadi near Brahmavar ended her life owing to dowry harassment inflicted by her husband and in-laws on Wednesday September 28 morning.

Amrita Shetty (27), wife of Shantaram Shetty of Yedtadi-Matyadi near Kundapur jumped into the well near her rented house at Jannadi on Wednesday.  She had been given in marriage to Shantaram, son of Sadashiv Shetty, six years ago.  Her parents had given Rs 5 lac as dowry at the time of marriage.

However, within few days, her husband and in-laws demanded her to bring Rs 2 lac from her parental as dowry.  Her elder brother had filed a complaint with the police in this regard.

After living with the in-laws, Amrita and Shantaram had shifted to a rented house at Jannadi owned by one Bhoja Shetty.  It is near this house that she jumped into the well and ended her life on Wednesday.  Amrita did not have any children.
