Indian golfers have strong medal chances: Coach

New Delhi, Sep 19 (IANS): India's chief golf coach Jasjit Singh feels that the men and women's teams have strong chances of finishing on the podium at the 17th Asian Games which started in the South Korean city of Incheon Friday.

"Though we have a very young team for the Asiad, we have a very strong chance of podium finish in both the men and women's team events. The players had good rounds of preparation going into the Games and we hope that they will keep up the momentum and come out with flying colours," Jasjit Singh said at the Delhi Golf Club (DGC), where the seven-member team was given a warm send-off by the Indian Golf Union.

Udayan Mane, Feroz Garewal, Samarth Dwivedi, Manu Gandas are in the men's team while the women's team comprise Aditi Ashok, Astha Madan and Gurbani Singh.

In the previous edition of the Asiad, men's team had won silver and Jasjit Singh is hoping that his wards will be successful this time as well.

"These players had recently played the Youth Olympics as well as the World Amateur Championship. To add to that we had a practice session in July-end at the course (Dream Park Country Club) in Korea which will host the competition in the Games. So, we are very confident about our performance," said the high performance manager.

The team, which will be captained by Raian F Irani, a non-playing member, will have its competitions, including individual events, from Thursday to Sunday.
