Bangalore, Oct 2: Members of Souharda Karnataka staged a dharna before Town Hall here on Saturday protesting the recent remarks by Education Minister D H Shankara Murthy. All India Trade Unions Congress, Students Federation of India, Dalit Youth Federation of India and Dalit Panthers took part in the protest.
Noted rationalists Prof Govind Rao, K Marulasiddappa and Prof Ramadas lead the protest.
The whole episode of maligning Tipu is a preamble to the Shoba Yatra being planned by the Sangh Parivar, said the note.
The protesters also urged the JD (S) to make its stand clear and that the government should honour the wishes of former prime minister H D Deve Gowda and issue orders to prevent the BJP from taking up the Yatra.
The government should also ensure that the Supreme Court order regarding conduct of rites and rituals is adhered to at Bababudangiri – Datta Peetha, they demanded.
The protesters also urged the government to withdraw official gazetteers published about 15 years ago and constitute a new committee with ‘objective’ historians.
