India makes history, enters Mars orbit in maiden attempt

Bangalore, Sep 24 (IANS): India Wednesday created space history by becoming the first country in the world to enter Mars orbit in its maiden attempt, an event that Prime Minister Narendra Modi described as achieving the "near impossible".

India's Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) glided over 650 million km through deep space for over nine months to reach the red planet's orbit.

"The spacecraft (Orbiter) successfully entered the Martian orbit at 7.55 a.m. and is located at about 515 km from its surface...," a senior space official told IANS at the mission control centre here.

Radars at the earth stations of NASA at Goldstone in the US, Madrid in Spain, Canberra in Australia and India's own deep space network at Baylalu near Bangalore received the radio signals from the Orbiter, confirming its insertion in the Mars orbit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who keenly witnessed the event, exhorted that the successful Mars mission "must become a base for challenging the next frontier".

The success "will go down as landmark in history", said a visible delighted Modi.

The prime minister said that the MOM was built "indigenously, in a pan-Indian effort" and added that India is the only country to have succeeded in its very first attempt.

"India is first to have succeeded in the very first attempt. The success of the space programme is a shining symbol of what we are capable of as a nation," Modi said.

Congratulating the space scientists, he said: "With today's spectacular success, ISRO joins an elite group, of only three other agencies worldwide to have successfully reached the Red Planet."

Modi, wearing a red coloured jacket, said that the "odds, were stacked against us".

"Of the 51 missions, attempted across the world so far, a mere 21 had succeeded. But we have prevailed," he said.

He went on: "Travelling an incredible distance, of over 650 million or 65 crore kms, we have gone beyond boundaries of human enterprise and imagination."

Noting that the whole nation celebrates when the cricket team wins a tournament, the prime minister described the success of the MOM as "thousand times greater" and said all Indians must celebrate the success of our space scientists today.

"Let India celebrate the achievements of its scientists. Let students in every school and college applaud their efforts," he added.

The final orbiting exercise began in the early hours at 4.17 a.m. when the spacecraft switched over to the medium gain antenna to emit and receive radio signals.

After rotating the Orbiter towards Mars at 6.57 a.m., the main engine was ignited at 7.17 a.m. for enabling the spacecraft enter its orbit from the sun orbit, where it cruised for over nine months and 24 days during its voyage to the red planet from the Earth.

During the crucial operation, when a solar eclipse occurred on Mars from 7.12 a.m., the 440 Newton liquid apogee motor (LAM) of the main engine started its burn at 7.30 a.m. and lasted for 24 minutes till 7.54 a.m. to swing the spacecraft into the Martian orbit.

The speed of the spacecraft was also reduced by 2.14 metre per second from 22.2 km per second for entering the Martian orbit from the sun orbit.

The five scientific instruments onboard the 475kg (dry mass) Orbiter will study the red planet's surface, its mineral composition and scan its atmosphere for methane gas in search of life-sustaining elements.

The Rs.450-crore ($70 million) ambitious mission was launched Nov 5, 2013 on board a polar rocket from spaceport Sriharikota off Bay of Bengal, about 80 km northeast of Chennai.

The success of the Mars mission has made India join the elite club of the US, Europe and Russia, which reached the red planet after initial failures.

The state-run Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) became the fourth international space agency after National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the US, Russian Federal Space Agency (RFSA) and European Space Agency to have undertaken successful missions to Mars.

India also became the first Asian country to have entered the Mars sphere of influence (gravity) Tuesday, as a similar mission by China failed in 2011.

As the fourth planet away from sun, Mars is the second smallest celestial body in the solar system. Named after Roman god of war, it is also known as red planet due to the presence of iron oxide in abundance, giving it a reddish appearance.

Though both the planets have equal period of revolution around their axis, Mars takes 24 hours and 37 minutes to complete a revolution. Earth takes 365 days to orbit sun while Mars 687 days to move around sun.

"We have demonstrated and proved our technological capabilities in undertaking outer space missions with an indigenous rocket and our own spacecraft," a beaming ISRO chairman K. Radhakrishnan said on the occasion.

"MOM is a major step towards our future missions in the inter-planetary space," he added.

I was listening while driving yesterday evening BBC, London sarcastically commented the audacity of a poverty stricken nation like India venturing into Mars orbit etc.

Thanks to late Rajiv Gandhi, MMS, Sonia Gandhi and our own S.M.Krishna who pioneered the auto, IT field on the national and state levels, that eventually created Silicon Valley in the USA!!

The advanced countries are envious of our spirit of venturing into the unknown, such as the continent of Antarctica etc. while we have many challenges to run our economy.

Had the above leaders not foreseen the future of IT, Biotech, auto industry, and now space technology, millions of educated youth of our country would have been doing menial jobs for their survival.

We as Indians, will continue to spread our enterprising spirit that will help us to meet any future food, economic crisis which has hit most of the arrogant nations of the world already.

    Jai Hind.

    Dear Dear kuldesh, bangalore,

Have those 40% Indian doctors invented anything in the medicine?!~
They are there to make money .

All the doctors working in Nigeria and Sierra Leone have come back. Can't they fight Ebola and can't they find a medicine for Ebola. Most of our Indian doctors are cunning and money making Mola/ Rabit and Koula/cunning fox.

How the N.R.I. campaigner of Chaaiwaala returned back to U.S.A.???!!!
Couldn't he see his Acchhe dhin with Chaaiwaala. Because he knows well that the Indian Chaaiwaala P.M.

See only in this news comments all Chaaiwaala P.R.O’s are crediting the success of Mangalayan to Chaaiwaala.
And you tell me what he did to the success not even he sanctioned money for this Mangalayan. All was the support of the previous government Dr. Manmohanji and Soniaji.

We are already fourth largest economy in the world.

Is it because of Chaaiwaala. He looted the treasury of Gujarat without Lokayukta and filled the pockets of RSS to contest P.M. position.

By involving 500 top scientists we succeeded in achieving a mission impossible to make India proud.
But with ignorance or deliberately and reluctantly following a couple centuries old error is a real misery.
What is the sacrifice or charity we have been doing by carrying and moving the bullock carts on wheels since the introduction of vehicle engine by consuming expensive fuel?
Being more than a million engineers are unemployed in India, why not even a single engineer is ready to join to make a revolutionary change in the surface transport sector?
While we enjoy the mobile revolution, why we need to suffer a lengthy automobile evolution with health hazardous air pollution and peace disturbing sound pollution, sky high costs of essential commodities, mounting costs of transportation, vehicles and their running and maintenance costs?
Why we burn the economy to feed millions of vehicles, by keeping millions of people to starve and die?
The opportunity is to have rapid revolution in the surface transport sector with simple concept change.
Heavy burden of commuters and goods on wheels can be a blessed boon by using it as a powerful pushing force to a huge volume of fuel and to generate free energy.
Let us try to make the life of six billion people of comfortable with fresh air to breathe.

We can achieve greater and faster, with the rectification of a silly and serious error.
If we stop carrying and moving the bullock carts on wheels and pull, get pushed and move the carts, we can make a revolutionary change on surface, to see an excellent wonder.

Joseph, again you have given wrong information. US public schools are far better than Indian education system. Yes Indians find US Schools as not good as we are known for Rote learning (memorizing). Further in US I have seen people grow-up in the fields of economics, political science, etc. Can we Indians think beyond Engineering or medical? What respect does a BA (Political science) or MA (Economics) get in India? Come to US and see how respected a MA(Economics/ political science) gets here. All our Indian economists are educated in Harvard/ Stanford. And the statistics you gave like 40% of doctors in US are Indians etc. How many of those Indians doctors in US really came from Indian system . Even Satya Nadella would have been only a programmer in Infosys if he had not studied further in US.

One has to thank Pandit Nehru for laying the foundation for Science and technology in our country, these leaders had the vision even then when funds where hard to come by to establish space , scientific, technological and other democratic institutions. These institutions have helped India, This vision is bearing fruit now.

Where as the Europeans and westerners use their minds for something to achieve or for some inventions.

It is best left at this point itself because there is some hidden animosity towards convents, best of educational institutes....!!?? It happens when there is sort of a grudge against those?
By the way Convents do not give degrees and best of educational institutions too may not grant long degrees too.
The persons studying in them or any other educational institute obtain degrees after passing successfully in the examinations. Until this point these educational institutes imbibe in them as much as possible for the person\s to be good in character\intelligent and to be successful in life.

When they are out of those educational institutions, it is up to them to be what they want to be - good\bad\successful\failure i.e. it is solely depending on their efforts.
Your thinking you put in words here may be misplaced and sounds sort of com....

By the way, why take your anger on English language? It was definitely required earlier for communication as we have different languages in various States. Now that the people are moving from one State to another and learn the languages of those States, English has lost it's prominence. There are instant dictionaries to translate words from one language to another and English is not at all required whilst travelling in non-english speaking countries. Even in higher studies like space and such advanced subjects, English language is not required at all.....Why blame English language - it is my, theirs, your choice to use
    it.
There were so many great people who did not know English and still there are. Why call it as a foreign language when we are using it daily to communicate. I'll say it is one of the languages I know.

Even in Banks and financial institutions such people ended their career with senior clerk,or the maximum Sr.Manager. Less educated/low profile people became Chairman, utive Director of the Bank.
Even a conductor became minister,a paper distributing boy became minister.bustagent became State Chief Minister.
Those who attained higher status/position in the govt are not even got their preliminary education is English medium.
Those who floated high standard schools, and who are too much proud of attaining big, long degrees from convents, best educational institutions could not make remarkable progress in their career.Lot of such examples are before us.

My own co-brother's son who had studied Mechanical Engineer from Chennai presently has 4 patent rights for his inventions carried out in the United States.

He was speaking andu undu, pouda vaada. Now when I spoke to him in skype he speaks such polite English and from his English anybodies heart may melt so lovely, kind and polite speech.

Presently his company has entrusted him the job of: the car must run in solar energy. With the solar batteries car can run but with solar energy the car must run as of now how the car runs.

He says he may achieve this job accomplishment within a year or within 5 years or within 10 years or he may not achieve.

After all in USA they have such companies that they pay to the employee and entrust the work of inventions. Our Ambanies, Tatas, Adanies think of how they themselves become rich in the world.

    mr joseph,

in usa education system is in tatters.govt schools are free of cost for its citizens.but these govt schools instead of concentrating on education they are concentrating on too much sports.thats why hi-fi usa citizens send thier children to private schools that cost thousands of dollars which concentrate more on education on than sports.usa students soon after completing school education are working in petrol bunks, groceries etc where they get almost rs 1 lakh inr monthly.they argue that even if they become doctors or engineers or scientists they will get few bucks more than thier salary.so thay are happy with that salary.breakdown of thier familial system is one of the reason.
    these days
all the jobs requiring hifi skills are taken by indian and chinese professionals.

this is the fact told by a white man to me when i was onsite.

40% of doctors in usa are indians.
45% of scientists in usa are indians.
4 out of 10 scientists in nasa are indians.
more than 90% of s/w programmers are indians.
all the manufacturing goods from toilet papers to electronics are imported from china.

For example Mumbai-Mangalore Mahendra Express pointed out few things that happened during UPA rule. I agree with him that these corruptions costs millions for India, not just to one party but what he failed to add those scams which happened during NDA rule. If you want to talk about corruption, talk straight without partisan, because corruption is corruption whoever done that. If you care for India as a whole and not for a particular party, then raise your voice against corruption in forums like this. We do not gain anything if we , common citizens, debate who is more corrupt but voice collectively against corruption.

    mahesh,
sardar patel statue is more important than this because it is his efforts paved the way for todays miracle.patel clubbed all the princley states by his statesmanship and force and today it is called india.if india is not there citizens of india will never get respect in world.he efforts made india 7th largest country in the world.today usa ,europe, china, russia give respect to india because of its continental size geography and 1 billion population.future generations should know the sacrifices our freedom fighters like subhashchandra bose, bhagat singh, patel, chandrashekar azad made so that they are living safe and secure in a country of huge geography called india.

Who else knows science better than us? We were best in astronomy n astrology....Einstein once told that "we owe a lot to Indians, who taught us how to read and count, without which no worthwhile scientific discoveries could have been made "These days science is accident. Accidentally people had discovered. But years before we had discovered everything.

There is nothing wrong in Ismail Perinje's English.

Engaged Scientists means people who are engaged in this project - ತಮ್ಮನ್ನು ತಾವು ತೊಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿರುವ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನಿಗಳು

Ground level workers means hardcore workers who worked for the project - ಕೆಳ ಮಟ್ಟದ/ಮೂಲ ಕೆಲಸಗಾರರು

When you read English, you need to look at the context of the topic, not GRAMMAR.

If you look at GRAMMAR/PHRASE/MEANING OF EACH WORD, English is very stupid language.

As the PM, Mr. Narendra Modi rightly said, "The short form of this Mars mission is MOM, knew as soon as I heard this that MOM never disappoints". Congrats to all ISRO scientists. The prayers of all Indians have been answered.

yeh lo, FEKU supporters shuru ho gaye.

Now they will give credit to FEKU for this achievement like they gave while Mumbai Metro & largest Indian war ship inaugurated.
No one will appreciate Congress for their initiative.

Today you can see real color of FEKU supporters on Facebook shares and comments.

Whatever people from Mumbai etc. say the actual facilities\finance\encouragement was given by the Congress and then the UPA Governments.
Due to that our Scientists and others in ISRO could achieve so much and even send spacecraft, under MOM, into martian orbit on it's maiden voyage itself, which is a FIRST.
Same like this achievement which comes just after BJP took over at the center, many other developments
which are the works of UPA, have culminated just after (within 150 days) of New Government taking over and taking credit for those.
    Absurd thinking by followers.

We worship cricketers and Bollywood artists. Anything beyond that makes no news.

Bravo! Feel more fraud when our great scientist achieve miracles and reach another planet far far away. Same time feel disgusting when our PM asking citizens to clean up the filth piled up everywhere. See the two extremes.

I am very SURPRISED and SADDENED that no one has announced a PRIZE/REWARD for ISRO Scientists and Engineers for this UNIQUE & GREAT Achievement. I read couple of international medias this morning, whole world is taking about INDIA.

If India had won T20 world cup today, within few hours each player would have got more than 100 crore Rs, cars, sites, buildings, apartments.
