The Mangalore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) here has mooted a survey for incorporating a rapid mass transit system in Mangalore, N. Yogish Bhat, MLA, told The Hindu.

MUDA has shown interest in creating an alternative mode of transport in addition to the existing system.

According to district in-charge Minister B. Nagaraj Shetty, at a time when Mangalore city is poised to get large investments it was appropriate that the city's transport system be revamped. Mr. Bhat pointed out that buses were the only mode of mass transport, which was not able to handle peak hour traffic.

According to Mr. Shetty, the Government was considering a survey to find out the potential of new modes of transport for the city.

The survey would be taken up at a cost of Rs. 1 crore. MUDA's resolution had already been sent to the Transport Ministry and to the Chief Minister, he added.
