Around 100 Bahrainis fighting alongside IS

Dubai, Sep 26 (IANS): Around 100 Bahrainis have taken up arms alongside the Islamic State (IS) Sunni radical group, Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa said.

Al Khalifa was speaking on Al Arabiya news channel Thursday about the Manama Anti-Terrorism Conference, which will be held in November, Gulf Daily News reported Friday.

"Bahrainis in Daesh (the Arabic name for IS) are fewer than 100," the minister was quoted as saying.

"Terrorism is of great harm, more important is the common stand against it. Islam is a magnanimous religion," he said.

He also said that Bahrain has joined the US-led military operation targeting IS sites in Iraq.

"Bahrain participates with F-16 jets to pound IS and it is not the first participation with allies and friends," he added.

"Bahrain plays a key role in confronting the danger and as long as our communities are targeted, Bahrain will remain part of the coalition."
