The statement came as President Salvador Sanchez Ceren of El Salvador was addressing the annual high-level debate of the UN General Assembly, which entered its third day here Friday, Xinhua reported.

"El Salvador makes every effort to improve the quality of life of the population and to build the conditions that allows us to strengthen values, family unity, create opportunities for new generations, and raise awareness about the risks of irregular migration," said Ceren.

It is important to work with communities of origin of migrant population, generating better conditions and increasing the investment in education, health, safety, and jobs, he said, adding that all this must be done with a perspective of a joint responsibility between countries of origin, transit, and destination.

The president said it is necessary for the UN system, especially the General Assembly, to assume an increasing role on the migration issue and to recognise human mobility as a relevant factor in the work of the organisation.
