Karunanidhi urges president, PM to restore law, order in TN

Chennai, Sep 27 (IANS): DMK president M. Karunanidhi Saturday urged President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and others to personally intervene to restore law and order in the state.

In letters to Mukherjee and Modi, copies of which were released to the media, Karunanidhi also urged them to take action against erring police officials who are hand-in-glove with the AIADMK cadres and failing to check the violence.

Karunanidhi also sent identical letters to the Chief Justice of India, home minister, Tamil Nadu governor, Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, home ministry secretary, chief secretary of Tamil Nadu and home secretary of the state.

Referring to the conviction of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in the disproportionate assets case, Karunanidhi said the state is witnessing large-scale violence by the AIADMK cadres.

He said the AIADMK cadres have attacked DMK leaders, functionaries and party offices and the residence of BJP leader Subramanian Swamy.

"They are also attacking the innocent people and destroying public property with an intention to instil fear and panic in the minds of residents," Karunanidhi said.

He said the police in the state are silent spectators to these lawless acts.

"There is complete break down of constitutional machinery in Tamil Nadu," he said.
