Bhambri wins men's singles bronze in Asiad tennis


Incheon, Sep 28 (IANS): India's Yuki Bhambri settled for the bronze medal, losing to Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka in the men's singles semi-final of the 17th Asian Games at the Yeorumul Tennis Courts here Sunday.

Bhambri, seeded fourth, lost 6-3, 2-6, 1-6 to the Japanese fifth seed in an hour and 44 minutes.

The Indian started the match on a positive note, winning the first set 6-3 as the Japanese struggled to find any rhythm.

Nishioka, however, upped his game in the second and snatched all momentum from Bhambri.

Bhambri found the going extremely hard with set ending 6-2 in favour of the Japanese.

Spurred by the second set win, Nishioka completely dominated and outplayed the 22-year-old Indian, who lost the third set 1-6 in just 30 minutes.

India now have 29 medals (three gold, five silver, 21 bronze).
