President to celebrate Durga Puja in Bengal


New Delhi, Sep 29 (IANS): President Pranab Mukherjee will celebrate Durga Puja festival in his native village in West Bengal's Birbhum district, an official announcement said Monday.

Mukherjee will visit Kirnahar and his home village Mirati from Sep 30 to Oct 3 where he will perform puja and will meet the local people, a Rashtrapati Bhavan statement said.

On Oct 2, he will pay floral tributes at the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri, at Kirnahar Shib Chandra High School. He will also mark the day by flagging off children squads belonging to the school on "Swachh Bharat Abhiyan" cleanliness drive, that is to be formally launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on that day on his return from the US.
