BSF recovers five kg heroin near India-Pakistan border


Chandigarh, Oct 1 (IANS): Border Security Force (BSF) troopers recovered five kg of heroin following a gunfight with smugglers from the Pakistan side in Punjab's Ferozepur sector, BSF officials said Wednesday.

"Border Security Force personnel have successfully seized five packets of contraband Heroin and one mobile phone and three Pakistani SIM cards today (Wednesday) in the area of Border Out Post Mohamadiwala in Ferozepur sector," a BSF spokesman said.

Ferozepur sector is 270 km from here.

He said the smugglers from Pakistani side were seen throwing packets across the barbed wire fencing along the international border. They were challenged but they did not pay heed to the warnings.

In the following encounter, the smugglers managed to escape back into Pakistan, the spokesman said.

The heroin is said to be worth Rs.25 crore in the international market.

With the latest seizure, the BSF has seized over 270.6 kg of heroin this year. The seizure of heroin in the entire last year (2013) was 322 kg in the Punjab sector.
