Wolfsburg held 1-1 by Lille in Europa League

Berlin, Oct 3 (IANS) German football club Wolfsburg came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against France's Lille on home soil in the UEFA Europa League.

Kevin De Bruyne's volley secured Wolfsburg at least a point as Lille grabbed the lead against the run of the play following a penalty Thursday, reports Xinhua.

The "Wolves" dictated the pace in front of home crowd while the visitors from France staged a well-positioned defence defending deep in their own half.

As a consequence, Wolfsburg were only able to twice threaten Lille's goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama as Ivan Perisic came close before Sebastian Jung shot into the arms of Enyeama from a promising position.

After the interval, Wolfsburg increased their pressure creating scoring opportunities through Joshua Guilavogui and Perisic but Lille's goalkeeper was once again on guard.

Wolfsburg's substitute Nicklas Bendtner wasted two more chances, as the hosts' efforts seemed to remain fruitless. Things went from bad to worse in the 77th minute when Lille earned a penalty following Ricardo Rodriguez's handball inside the box.

Lille broke the deadlock against the run of the game as Divock Origi stepped up to convert the awarded penalty into the bottom left to stun the hosts.

Nolan Roux had a decent chance to kill the game for Lille with nine minutes remaining but instead Wolfsburg restored parity through De Bruyne, who hammered home a volley into the roof of the net following a Rodriguez corner at the 82nd minute.

With the result Wolfsburg remain in last place of Group H in Europa League.

The "Wolves" sit behind Lille, Krasnodar and front-runners Everton.
