Puducherry shutdown hits normal life

Puducherry, Oct 4 (IANS): Normal life was affected here Saturday following the general strike (bandh) called by the AIADMK unit in protest of the jailing of their leader J. Jayalalithaa.

Government and private owned buses were off the roads, while shops had downed their shutters.

"Security has been beefed up to prevent any untoward incident," a police officer said.

A special court in Bangalore Sep 27 convicted former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa to four years in jail and a fine of Rs.100 crore in a disproportionate assets case.

Jayalalithaa is now lodged in the Bangalore Central Jail.
