Mangalore, Oct 13: District Legal Services Authority in association with Wenlock Hospital organised a workshop on 'Building Awareness - Reducing Risks: Mental Illness and Suicide' at the district prison here on Thursday October 12.
The workshop was held as part of World Mental Health week. Speaking on the occasion, district sessions judge H M Bharatesh stressed on the need to effectively implement the Mental Health Act, 1987. He lamented that even after the Act was passed, it took six years for the authorities to implement it.
He also said that inmates of the prison must be educated on the issue of mental health and they must be treated with compassion.
Among those present were district prison medical officer Dr Gopesh Kumar and additional chief judicial magistrate Mamadapura.
