Bangladesh opposition party warns government of uprising

Dhaka, Oct 7 (IANS): Bangladesh National Party (BNP) joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Tuesday warned that a mass uprising against Sheikh Hasina-led government was imminent if his party's demand of an interim election was not met.

"A mass uprising against this illegal government is imminent," bdnews24.com quoted Rizvi as saying at a press conference in the capital Dhaka.

He said the government was creating a "smokescreen" to sidestep the BNP's demand for an interim election.

"This illegal government must step down to ensure a free, fair and credible election participated by all and supervised by a neutral body," the BNP leader demanded.

The BNP and its allies boycotted the last general elections, demanding a non-partisan supervision.

They have since been demanding a dialogue for fresh elections at the earliest but Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has rejected it.

Hasina said Monday that the BNP leaders were "incoherent" in what they said. She said her bitter political rival BNP chief Khaleda Zia would not accept invitations for talks but would continue to demand it.
