Karkala, Oct 14: A veterinary surgeon of veterinary hospital at Kaup in Udupi taluk was killed after being struck by lightning at Belman near here on Friday October 13 evening.

Dr Murari Bhandarkar (58) was a veterinary surgeon at Karkala.  On Friday evening he was on his way to his house at Kotebagilu in Moodbidri when it started raining.  So he stopped his mobike under a tree near Belman and was wearing his raincoat when he received a call on his cell phone.  He picked the call and was talking to the person on the other side when lightning struck. As a result, Murari died on the spot. 

He was supposed to get retired at the end of this month.  It was only recently that he had built a new house at Kotebagilu.  He is survived by wife and three children.
