Kundapur, Oct 16: A whirlwind that hit Hallihole gram panchayat here has caused severe damage to crops and fields belonging to more than 200 families.
The loss, estimated at Rs 10 lac, was reported from areas like Irige, Mavinakumbri, Tankanabail and Bellattu. Hundreds of arecanut, coconut and other tress were completely destroyed.
The damage has caused obstruction to vehicles plying to these hamlets. Electricity and telephone cables have been damaged marring communication and power supply. Incessant rain coupled with lightning is causing further trouble to the residents.
Though the destruction and loss was huge, no official has visited the site, nor has MESCOM taken any step to restore electricity.
