Airtel rolls out 'public Wi-Fi' service in Hyderabad


Hyderabad, Oct 10 (IANS): Bharti Airtel Friday rolled out "public Wi-Fi" facility at select locations in Information Technology hub of Hitec City here as a first step towards Telangana government's goal of making Hyderabad a Wi-Fi enabled city.

Under the facility launched on pilot basis, users of smartphone, tablets and other Wi-Fi-enabled devices can use the service free of cost for three months.

Users at 17 locations in an eight km radius in the IT district can log on to the Airtel network and get a one-time password to access the network. Each user can use 750 mb of data per day for free.

Launching the service, Telangana's IT Minister K. Taraka Rama Rao said that the government plans to cover the whole 700 sq km area of Hyderabad in four months.

He said that the government will rope in various service providers to offer similar services across the city.

Venkatesh Vijayraghavan, CEO, Bharti Airtel - Andhra Pradesh and Telangana - said that they have used optic fiber technology for offering the service.

The service provider is working out tariff for the services and other modalities.
