Karachi tunnel jailbreak bid foiled

Islamabad, Oct 14 (IANS) An attempt to free terrorists from the Central Jail in Pakistan's port city of Karachi was foiled by Rangers, a top official said Monday.

Terrorists were digging a tunnel from a nearby house in the city's Ghousia Colony to launch an attack and release prisoners from the jail, Geo News quoted deputy Director General Rangers Colonel Tahir as telling reporters.

The attempt was foiled after Rangers received intelligence, Colonel Tahir said, adding: “The terrorists had dug 45 metres and were arrested with ten metres remaining.”

He said the house was recently purchased by terrorists who were using the latest equipment to dig the tunnel.

The target of the jailbreak was a barrack where terrorists from banned organisations are imprisoned, he added while thanking people for their help in foiling the attempt.
