Reykjavik, Oct 14 (IANS): Iceland beat World Cup runners-up the Netherlands 2-0 in European Championship football qualifiers here.
Swansea midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson scored twice before half time to help Iceland stun their more illustrious opponents Monday night, reports Xinhua.
It was Iceland's first ever victory over the Netherlands in 11 meetings.
Iceland are now joint top with the Czech Republic in Group A, as the latter beat Kazakhstan 4-2 in Almaty. The Netherlands are third.
Sigurdsson opened the socring in the 10th minute after Stefan de Vrij had brought down Birkir Bjarnason and doubled the score in the 42nd after the Dutch defence failed to clear a corner.
"We put them in the saddle by giving them two goals," said winger Arjen Robben.
