Highest voter turnout in Haryana: EC


New Delhi, Oct 15 (IANS): Haryana has recorded the highest voter turnout in any assembly election so far, the Election Commission said here Wednesday.

"Haryana recorded a voter turnout of 73 percent which is the highest so far in any assembly election," Deputy Election Commissioner Umesh Sinha told media persons.

He said Maharashtra recorded a turnout of 54.5 percent till 5 p.m. and the figure was likely to exceed 62 percent.

In Maharashtra, the voter turnout in the 2009 assembly polls was 59.9 percent.

The poll panel said two incidents of firing were reported from Maoist-affected Gadchiroli area in Maharashtra. One CRPF trooper was injured in the firing.

In Haryana, an incident of violence was reported from Sirsa but not one was injured.
