Mozambique's ruling party heading to poll victory


Maputo, Oct 16 (IANS): Former Defence Minister Filipe Nyusi from the ruling Frelimo party is emerging as the winner of Mozambique's presidential race, according to newly-released preliminary results.

He was followed by Afonso Dhlakama, leader of the main opposition Renamo party, according to data provided Thursday by press centres of some polling stations, mainly in the capital Maputo and the northern province of Nampula, Xinhua reported.

The results showed that Nyusi, the Frelimo candidate, got 283,629 of the votes so far while Dhlakama got 134,848.

In Maputo province alone, results from 274 polling stations out of 8,500 gave 72,703 votes to Nyusi and 12,810 to Dhlakama.
