Arvind Subramanian new chief economic advisor

New Delhi, Oct 16: The Narendra Modi government Thursday appointed US-based economist Arvind Subramanian as the chief economic advisor in the finance ministry, filling a key position that has been lying vacant for over a year.

Soon after assuming charge, Subramanian said he would focus on growth, investment and creating opportunities for all sections of Indian society.

"For any economy like India, the two big things are macro economic stability and of course creating conditions for rapid investment and growth. While creating opportunity for all segments of Indian society, no one should be left out of this process," he told media persons outside his office.

"It is an absolute honour and privilege to come at this time, a time of great hope and dynamism for the economy, to serve in the government that has a mandate for reform and change," he added.

Educated at St. Stephens College and IIM Ahmedabad, Subramanian is the senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics and at the Center for Global Development, both based in Washington, the finance ministry said in a statement here.

He is currently ranked amongst the top one percent of the world's economists in terms of citation of research as per a widely used ranking system, it added.

The post has been lying vacant since Raghuram Rajan became the Reserve Bank of India governor in September last year.

Subramanian, who has worked closely with Rajan in the past, was assistant director in the research department of the International Monetary Fund and was associated with the GATT (1988-92) during the Uruguay Round of trade negotiations.

Subramanian's award-winning book "Eclipse: Living in the Shadow of China's Economic Dominance" was published in September 2011 and Foreign Policy magazine named him as one of the world's top 100 global thinkers in 2011," the statement said.

Now the grand master plan has begun to unfold slowly but surely. All the economic advice that our rulers obtain will have it's origin in the Oval office/white house. Swamy or whoever will just be a messenger. Don't be surprised if INR continues it's free fall against USD into abyss.

Not a bad choice. Cannot expect over night, things to change but the basic structure of our economic policy has to be redesigned, restructured. Hope the present advisor Mr. Arvind Subramanian will offer his right advise and the Finance Ministry will implement it.

We want jobs, better infrastructure, better governance and hassle free services from the govt. departments.

Nothing is over Black money you saw a development in the process and with regards to cleaning its not one day as PM has made it as peoples movement and will be successfull if you me and everyone join hands to make it successfull. Please think before scribbling rubbish in this forum. All are aware whats happening and the change in administration by our PM Modi. Everything is getting MODIfied. UPA was poor in implementaion even it had the policies, but now those policies are getting implemented. Earlier govt was looking to make money out of every project so it was pending from long.

Shail, PETER and JOSSEY are like dhoomaketus.. Nobody treats them seriously! Responding to them LOGICALLY, is not allowed! :D .. just sarcasm, is what they understand.. dont waste ur time in discussing Subramaniam swamy!

they very well know Nehru Khandaan, would have never got a seat in any of the education institutions in India, by FAIRER MEANS!! cos they were all incompetent... hence, they were sent to oxford and london to enjoy, in the name of higher education... evangelists there used to give them a degree too, which was never verified back home.. "FOREIGN RETURNED" is the only qualification they used to have...! forget it.. they asking for somebody's degree is laugahbale, at the least..!

Also he will tell you who you are allowed to discuss about. Certainly not Subramanian!!!

Then in his next para talking about Nehru family - do you think his views are thick with SARCASM?
Now who is telling whom about sarcasm and being sarcastic?

I dont know why Modi too followed the same steps as else! .. why do we have that belief that "anything that comes from west, wall street, NYC or washington" is the BEST for our country..? There are good people here too!... Why not, a K.V.Kamath for example..?

Amartya Sen, Raghuram Rajan, Jagdeesh Bhagwati, Arvind Subramaniam.... all lived in "DOLLAR" world and have been failures and it was MANMOHAN SINGH, who used to work here in India, was succeful in opening economy or a STAT PROFESSOR like Dr.SUBRAMANIAM SWAMY or a BANKER/JOURNO LIKE ARUN SHOURIE kinds know our country well... anyways, wish Arvind Subramanian good luck.. tough task ahead..! controlling inflation, sustaining growth, Controlled DIVESTMENT, Asset creation, RATE CUTs!!.. Modi, Raghuram, a full time Finance minister (hope JAITLEY gets out of it), Arvind and a proper FINANCE SECREATARY ( heard they sent current FS Arvind meyram to tourism)..hell lot of a task ahead! however, things are looking good. :)

Dear Vellano11,Like you I too believed that K V Kamath waa great economist. But, after his 2 years tenure in Infosys as Chief utive/Chairman ,when IT major showed a negetive growth, the trend was reverswed oy by Sri Murthy the founder Chairman due to his prudence.Even the ICICI Bank is doing very good under the leadership of Ms Chanda Kochar and she is doing better than Kamath.Rough and tough attitude always will not lead to success....even such attitude brings sucess it is only temorary.

Arre Prabhugale... KVK was just for an example.. he was misfit in an IT conpany, just like Nandan was misfit in Governement of India! :)

the economic advisor is like a CFo/or his adviser.. and he deals with economic policies and stabilities..!! I am sure, he wld click! but anyways, I respect ur differeing views..

my worry with Aravind is, he is one "MODI HATER"! he ooposed WTO stand of India.. afterall, they r bred is west and always consider "America" as their motherland! ... also his leanings r very leftist... and I dont know how he will cope up with this big responsibility.. :)
