16 killed in South Korea outdoor theatre accident

Seoul, Oct 17 (IANS): Sixteen people were killed and 10 others sustained injuries when a ventilation window at an outdoor theatre near Seoul, where a music concert was being held, collapsed Friday.

A total of 26 people were standing above the ventilation grate for a better view of a K-Pop performance at the outdoor theatre in Seongnam, just south of the capital Seoul, Xinhua reported citing Yonhap news agency.

Among them, 12 people died on the spot and two succumbed while being taken to a nearby hospital. The other two died during treatment at the hospital.

The number of fatalities was feared to rise as the people fell from a height of 10 metres to the fourth basement floor of the theatre's parking lot.

The ventilation window collapsed at 5.53 p.m.

About 700 people had gathered at the outdoor theatre for the evening concert of K-Pop stars.
