'Resolving Kashmir issue vital for peace'

Islamabad, Oct 18 (IANS): Pakistani Army chief General Raheel Sharif said Saturday that the resolution of the Kashmir issue was imperative for sustainable peace in the region.

Addressing a passing-out parade held at the Pakistan Military Academy in Kakul, the army chief said that the Kashmir issue should be resolved in the light of UN resolutions, Dawn online reported.

At least 20 people have lost their lives on both sides of the (Line of Control) LoC and the international boundary in recent skirmishes between the Indian and Pakistani armies.

Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan by the UN-monitored LoC but is claimed in full by both countries.

Ceasefire violations along the LoC and working boundary between Pakistan and India have been going on intermittently during the past several days.
