16 militants killed in Afghanistan

Kabul, Oct 19 (IANS): At least 16 militants were killed in two separate incidents in Afghanistan, officials said Sunday.

Twelve militants were killed in Kunduz province during a police ambush Sunday, said a security official.

"The militants were killed when police units carried out an ambush in Dasht-e-Archi district," the official told Xinhua. The militants were crossing a bridge when they wer ambushed, added the official.

In a separate incident, four militants were killed in Helmand province when a mine they were trying to plant on a road went off prematurely Saturday night.
