Mamata inaugurates new attractions at Alipore zoo

Kolkata, Oct 20 (IANS): An open air reptile house, an enclosure for smaller cats, an information centre and a renovated aviary were inaugurated at the Alipore zoo here by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Monday.

According to zoo director Kanailal Ghosh, the aviary 'Swarnamoyee House' has been strengthened with a steel framework and will now house seven to eight bird species including macaws, peacocks and pheasants.

The 'Mallick House', where the lesser cats (fishing cats) used to be showcased earlier, has been transformed into an information centre while the former residents have been shifted to a brand new enclosure.

"Any information on the history and evolution of the Alipore zoo can be obtained from the centre," Ghosh told IANS.

The reptile house would cater to snakes, tortoises and other species.
