Dhoni, Bhuvneswar left out, Kohli to lead India

Hyderabad, Oct 21 (IANS): Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar were left out of the squad for the first three of the five One-Day Internationals (ODI) against Sri Lanka, starting Nov 2, while star batsman Virat Kohli was named as the stand-in skipper of the 15-man squad selected here Tuesday.

The Sandeep Patil-led All-India Senior Selection Committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) included wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha in place of Dhoni while pacer Varun Aaron replaced Bhuvneshwar.

The BCCI statement made no mention whether the two players were being rested.

Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin returns to the squad while left-arm tweaker Kuldeep Yadav, included in the squad for the West Indies series, was left out.

However, Yadav was named in the India A team -- which will play Sri Lanka in a practice match Oct 30 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai -- along with Rohit Sharma, who is recovering from a finger injury.

The five ODIs will be played at Cuttack, Hyderabad, Ranchi, Kolkata and Ahmedabad.

Sri Lanka agreed to play the ODI series as a replacement for the West Indies, whose players refused to complete the full tour of India due to a payment structure dispute with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and the West Indies Players' Association (WIPA).

In form Batsmen like Robin Uttappa who is a good WK and several others have been ignored. In the past 2-3 years, the same 15 players are rotated. By this time India should have had a bench as strong as their playing 11 (Which is sadly today as weak as Zimbabwe ) . Many promising players are given short stints and expected to perform well within 2 or 3 games else they are gunned out. Other promising youngsters like Sanju Samson and several fast bowlers in the top four Ranji States can never hope to make the playing 11 as long as Dhoni is at the helm . It's really club over country now. It's literally the end of the road for Vinay Kumar & even Stuart Binny unless there is a change at the helm which is likely to happen and we will not hear the same dull names like Shastri, Gavaskar & Srinivasan , & CSK etall.
Do we not have other sweeter sounding names amongst Indian Cricketers like Kapil Dev , Mohinder Amarnath,Bishen Singh Bedi and several others who will do a fair and better job to the cricketing fraternity. This is bound to happen once the 2015 world cup is over. The interest in cricket has waned considerably of late and sports like Kabbadi and even football have gained popularity.
