Man gets 3-year jail for torturing wife

New Delhi, Oct 22 (IANS): A court here has sentenced a man to three years of rigorous imprisonment for cruelty to his wife.

"A person who marries a woman and brings her to his home, has a responsibility of not only keeping her happy but also to keep her safe from any danger inside and outside the house," said Additional Sessions Judge Parveen Singh while sentencing Ashraf Ali Tuesday.

"The act of the convict (Ali) thus becomes more serious as the person who had the responsibility of providing safety to the deceased acted like a predator and inflicted cruelty on daily basis," the court said.

"Not only physical cruelty, but the convict also committed mental cruelty and tortured the deceased endlessly."

Ali was convicted under provisions of Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code (husband subjecting wife to cruelty) and, besides the three years' rigorous imprisonment was fined Rs.10,000.

According to prosecution, Ali's wife Renu died due to burn injuries May 20, 2012.
