Mangalore: Vijaya Arun is Mayor, Abdul Saleem Dy Mayor

Daijiworld News Network – Mangalore

Mangalore, Oct 25: Vijaya Arun, who represents the Padav ward in the Mangalore City Corporation, is all set to don the mayoral robe.  She being the only candidate from the ruling Congress party, the mayoral elections slated to be held on Thursday October 26 are reduced to a mere formality. On the other hand, the ruling Congress party has announced Abdul Saleem, a young corporator representing the Jeppu ward, as deputy mayor.

Official sources from the Congress party, speaking to Daijiworld said that it is as good to say that the mayor and the deputy mayor have already been elected.  Since Congress enjoys enviable majority in the Corporation, it is unlikely that anyone would challenge these two.  The rival party BJP has only single digit seats in MCC and hence, elections on Thursday will be to fulfil the official formality.

With the election of Vijaya Arun for mayoral post, Congress has achieved a tactical victory over BJP.  The legal battle, which was fought almost for 3 months, has now come to an end.

As reported earlier in these columns, Vijaya Arun had questioned the government decision of changing the criterion for mayoral election in the High Court.

The selection of party candidate for mayor and deputy mayor, which went on as internal voting, will be announced officially on Thursday.
