Mangalore, Oct 26: Senior Corporator Vijaya Arun has been formally elected as the Mayor of Mangalore City Corporation on Thursday, Oct 26.
The Mayoral election was just a formality. Although Congress had formally announced its mayor on Wednesday night, the political drama came to an end when MCC got its new Mayor.
The internal voting by Congress has elevated Vijaya Arun to the post of Mayor and young corporator Abdul Saleem to the chair of Deputy Mayor.
At the election, which was participated by district-in charge Minister Nagaraj Shetty, and MLC Blasius M D’Souza, Vijaya obtained 42 votes. She obtained 17 votes against her and only Kamalaksha from Bajalakeri abstained from voting.
The BJP candidate Mariyamma Thomas obtained 43 votes against her and only 17 BJP votes favouring her.
Congress enjoys a majority in the council with 44 corporators as against 14 from opposition BJP.
