Sardar Patel statue to cost Rs 2,989 crore

Gandhinagar, Oct 28 (Deccan Herald) : Building the statue of Sardar Patel was one of his pet projects as chief minister of Gujarat and when Narendra Modi took charge as Prime Minister he ensured that Rs 200 crore was allocated from the Union Budget for the “Statue of Unity”.

Now, Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel has followed up the dream project of her mentor and on Monday, a work order amounting to Rs 2,989 crore was awarded to construction giant Larsen and Toubro with the hope that the statue would be completed in four years. The statue as visualised by Modi is touted to be one of the tallest in the world at a height of 182 metres.

“The construction work will be completed in four years at a cost of Rs 2,989 crore,’’ said Patel while making a formal announcement on Monday. She said that the project would restores the pride of the “Iron Man of India”.

“The project would involve not only of having the tallest statue, but underwater fish aquarium, agriculture development, water management centre and a museum dedicated to Sardar Patel,’’ said Patel.

Modi, prior to the general elections this year, had performed the ground breaking ceremony and announced that the iron used for the construction of this statue would be collected from farmers from different parts of the country.

“Leaders of different ranks from the BJP did go to several parts of the country and collected iron tools from farmers, but it reaped double harvest for Modi who not only collected iron but his party ensured an indirect campaign on his behalf,’’ said columnist R K Mishra.

93 million people of India are living in the slum conditions even in Delhi, half of the population, though not living exactly in the slums, their standard of living is way down.

If half a billion dollars is wisely used through micro-financing to help the helpless people, thousands of people could have created their own better standard of living. Half a billion dollars worth of stone image of Sardar Patel will be doing what?

hehe ED, come to India in 5 years.. we both will click our pics next to the sardar patel statue! :)

It doesn't make sense to me on many ways in which our chosen govt spends tax payers money!... like Karnataka CM constructing, a big 5 star accomodation for MLA/MP s to enjoy, just cos that "Baalabrooie guest house, of british times is cursed"!

it doesnt make sense to me to send anyone on HAJ with govt subsidy, just cos their holy place is abroad! .. or for that matter, a SHAADI BHAGYA- cos govt is not meant for getting people to marry... And take money from TEMPLE HUNDIs... cos govt has no business to manage temples either

... a Mangalyaan will also doesnt mean anything to people sitting in their drawing room, are not aware if there will be municipalisty water coming tomorrow or not and not knowing who stays in their next door neighbor..forget if there is life in mars or water...!

remember, there will be poverty everywhere and no matter, how much money from bottomless pit of cash, u give away, poverty will not be eradicated.. cos it is a RELATIVE term!.. and if u need share of black money or tax money to be paid to you, every government has CRORES OF RUPEES LOAN.. do u want to take share of it too..? Only ASSET SHARING Is not permitted.. even LIABILITES must be shared..

so, dont give me this bu##$$it logic..! this will be icnoic project going on side by side, along with nation building.. lets get back the glory of our nation...!!

    Jossey,
Please don't say, Sardar Patel is not huge Iconic figure. He is a great leader & the first person in Indian Govt, who expressed negerive view on Sangh Parivars and wanted to ban this organization. He knew, they can be problematic for nation in future. But Nehru and his ministers took his opinion lightly.

Now BJP is building same leaders statue, not for love towards him. It is just because, they want to portray Sardar Patel huge figure than Nehru in Indian politics & degrade Nehru/Gandhi family.

If FEKU had great love towards Sardar Patel, why didnt he built his statue, when he was CM for long time in gujrat?

If government wants to provide for some families jobs for 3 years, there r lots of jobs can be created to fill the potholes of all roads in India, Clear the Garbage & debris thrown on all over the streets to clean them, to construct new roads, highways, bridges, Ghats developments, but not to waste tax payers money for constructing statues costing Rs.2989 crores. As the cost factor I oppose it, but if it generates any ROI in terms of Tourisem, jobs etc which is in his Gujju Mind and if it works, I am more than proud of him as our PM and it would be another round of spit on the faces of Dongis.

If the weak opposition cannot stop this then I guess someone should file a PIL and get a notice from the court to stop this project for which the Govt has to bend to.

You can have one big statue of may be of Bronze for just few lakhs but not so much. India cannot afford such expenditures. Instead put it on Infrastructure may be in J&K or Andhra which may fetch some votes for BJP atleast. In less than half of that money the Govt can get a permanent solution for Shiradi Ghat by tunneling and saving cost on fuel.

    Rajesh, I respect ur sentiments.
I too hate "IDOL POLITICS".. mayawati made useless idols.. and shiva sena is planning an unrealistic "SHIVAJI MAHARAJ" idol at the middle of sea, which is unrealistic on both finance and nature/construction front..

I am supporting this cos of two reasons. One is "SARDAR PATEL" himself. Congress neglected him.. He was the BEST PRIME MINISTER, WE NEVER HAD! read his biography.. HE INDEED UNITED THIS COUNTRY!! all Kings and Nawabs were made on the dotted line, without using force! in a time bound manner and we were a UnION and REPUBLIC! he needs all respect.

second, Modi's business acumen itself. he generates revenue and job potential, in all his pet projects.

third, we Indians need Statue of Unity. if US can have a statue of liberty as main attraction and all these cribbing people who visit US, make it compulsary to take a pic there and also BRAZIL, which is a poor developing nation, has CHRIST THE REDEEMER Statue for years.. why shld we lack behind. also, this will prove base for Narmada rejuvenation...!.. yes, we have much pressing needs. but they will not be sidelined cos of this project. they will be ongoing..

and specially congres should try to remvoe all SONIA TEMPLEs in Andhra and rest of the places, if they hate idols.. :)

I know, now people here will come here and say " why statue, first form this, form that... ".... to all u people who crib like that - Bhaiyon, MODI kabhi tumhara suna hai, naa sunega! woh apne chahnewalon ke aur apne dil ko sunta hai!

and remember, he is GUJJU.. a gujju never spends a single penny, if it doesnt guarantee him proper ROI! he will generate enough business and tourism potential around this project..

now ask why L&T, and why nto ADANI or AMBANI!! ... fire....

L&T is always a nation building company. it worked on Mmubai Pune expressway or a runway in each airport or nuclear defence infras ... take anything, they do it professionally, infact they saved a lot on Mumbai-pune eway... they r best patriotic swadeshi organisation..

infact if it was given to Ajit gulabchand of HCC (who built bandra worli sea link) ... u wld have suspected more cos he is Gujju! -) but here Naik is maharastrian.. lol
