Mumbai, Oct 29: It was a scene straight out of a Bollywood movie when Charishma Kadakiya jumped to her death from the third floor parapet of her boyfriend’s building, Navyug Sagar, in Walkeshwar. The 25-year-old girl was seen contemplating suicide by onlookers who immediately informed the Teen Batti Police chowky, which is opposite the spot.

Shaikh Naooruddin, a driver working in Navyug Sagar, said he saw the girl fall in the presence of a constable. “When we saw the girl standing, we shouted out to her. A police constable had also come. However, before a police inspector could arrive she had leapt to death.”

Vijay Shinde, the constable who couldn't prevent Charishma's death is disheartened. “I immediately informed the Malabar police station about the situation. When I saw the girl standing on the parapet I ran up the stairs. I was still on the second floor when I heard a thud.”

Police say that Charishma went to her 27-year old boyfriend Nipun Joshi's building in her father's Toyota Corolla.

“She climbed to the parapet between the third and the fourth floors and sat there for a while. That is when people saw her and gathered around the building,” Isaque Bagwan, senior inspector, Malabar Hill police station said.

“I was patrolling in the area when a constable told me about the girl. I immediately rushed to the spot. We rushed to the fourth floor to persuade the girl from not jumping, but she jumped even before we could reach."

Charishma stayed at Grand Paradi, Kemps Corner, where her uncle Ashok Kadakiya owns an apartment. Ashok told the police that Charishma was undergoing treatment for depression. He refused to divulge any more information. "She was under depression and was undergoing treatment. I don't know what drove her to suicide."

Initial police investigations indicate that the suicide may be a result of family problems between Charishma's and Nipun's families.

"Charishma and Nipun were involved for the past few months. Last Monday, both the families had met but the girl's family did not approve of this relationship because they thought that Nipun is not as financially well placed as Charishma," said Bagwan.

Nipun has been detained by the police and statements of the two families have been recorded. The police are trying to find out if Charishma has left a suicide note or spoken to anyone before taking her life.
