Mangalore, Oct 30: 'Samprathi' an annual seminar on 'Current Issues Challenging Social Work' was inaugurated here on Monday October 30 at the St Aloysius College IT Auditorium.

Zilla Panchayat president Mamata D S Gatti inaugurated the seminar. The dignitaries lit the five lamps mounted on a globe, which symbolised 'light among darkness.'

Speaking on the occasion, college vice-principal Fr Denzil Lobo stressed on the need to have trained social workers instead of namesake ones. Rector Fr Francis Serrao, who presided over the programme, elaborated on the meaning of 'Samprathi' saying that the word stands for 'relevance' and it is not possible to give yesterday's answers to tomorrow's questions.

The seminar organised by the social work department of the college focused on issues like post modernism, human trafficking, right to information and market economy.

Professors and students from universities across South India and various NGO's participated in the seminar.

Coordinator of the seminar Savita Pereira welcomed the gathering while student coordinator of MSW Maxi D'Souza proposed the vote of thanks.
