Schalke beat Augsburg 1-0 in German Bundesliga

Berlin, Nov 1 (IANS): Schalke's Dutch striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar secured his side the third win on home soil with a 1-0 win over Augsburg to open the 10th round of the German Bundesliga.

Schalke earned their fourth win of the season while Augsburg suffered their fourth straight loss Friday, reports Xinhua.

Dutchman Huntelaar scored the only goal of the match to smooth the way for the win against the run of play.

The hosts suffered a setback as Schalke lost Julian Draxler to a thigh injury in the opening period.

Augsburg controlled the proceedings with a well-positioned defence.

They had two great opportunities to break the deadlock but Alexander Esswein failed to complete a counter attack before Raul Bobadilla missed the target following a dead ball in the 30th minute.

Up to that point Schalke remained absolutely harmless but it were the hosts who opened the scoring out of the blue.

Alexander Esswein produced a turnover allowing Atsuto Ochida to cross into the box where Klaas Jan Huntelaar tapped in the first chance of the game in the 37th minute.

Augsburg lacked ideas and penetration to level the scores although Halil Altintop and Tim Matavz came close.

With the result, Schalke move up to seventh place while Augsburg slip to 12th.
