Udupi, Nov 2: Kaup police have arrested a person who was involved in stealing of iron rods and other steel and iron based items.

The arrested person is Mohammed Bashir (34) a resident of Balkunje.

The accused who is said to be a ‘specialist’ in stealing iron and steel items was found in front of a refrigerator shop loading the iron rods into his Tata 407 vehicle in Kaup on Saturday. The vehicle had two different number plates.

The police also seized the vehicle and goods worth Rs 43000 from the accused. It is suspected that Bashir had borrowed the said vehicle from his brother in law.

It is said that the accused was involved in many thefts also in the past. In 2013, a case was registered against him at Mulki police station. He used to park the vehicle where the iron items were found. Then he would act as if he had stopped to repair the ‘broken down’ vehicle and later would load the items into the vehicle. He mostly stole from construction sites.

The accused has been remanded to judicial custody.
