Hong Kong students rule out meeting government officials

Hong Kong, Nov 4 (IANS/EFE): Student leaders of the Hong Kong pro-democracy movement Tuesday ruled out meeting central government officials in Beijing.

Student leader Yvonne Leung also dismissed the possibility of the meeting at the University of Hong Kong but said that it could take place in the future.

Nathan Law, another student leader, said that they were still debating about when and how they would go to Beijing and reflecting on more options before going on to seek further democratic reforms.

Secretary of Student Federation, Alex Chow had earlier indicated the possibility of the students travelling to Beijing during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit next week, when leaders from around the world would be present.

Student leaders had also planned to meet Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang or high officials of the National Assembly after their talks with the Hong Kong government ended without an agreement Oct 21.

Meanwhile, protesters continue to occupy the streets of the city without any signs of retreat since the protests broke out after China announced in August that Hong Kong's citizens would be able to vote directly only for the vetted candidates previously selected by a special commission.
