New Delhi, Nov 5 (IANS): Ace triple jumper Renjith Maheshwary Wednesday said that injuries prevented him from reaching his optimum level of performance this season.
Renjith was talking to the media after winning the gold at the ongoing 54th National Open Athletics Championships at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here.
Renjith managed to bag the yellow medal with a jump of 16.09 metres despite carrying a back injury, which visibly bothered him during his feat. The mark was below his meet record of 16.97m.
“The start of my season was hampered by injuries. I had to take necessary precautions to prevent aggravating my injuries. That stopped me from giving my best. It forced me to compete in less competitions,” Maheshwary said.
He said he participated for the sake of his employers despite carrying a back injury.
“I am still nursing a back injury but had to participate in the event for my employers Railways. My employers allow me to enjoy lot of facilities throughout the year, so it was imperative for me to participate,” the 28-year-old said.
He also expressed happiness for his wife, pole vaulter V.S. Surekha, who bettered her national record, registering 4.15 metres to win gold Tuesday. "She can do even better,” he signed off.
