Dubai, Nov 5: Annual scientific meeting of the University and the 16th anniversary celebrations by the faculty and staff to mark the completion of sixteen years of GMC/GMU were held at the campus on Wednesday, November 5.
The university has transformed from an academic centre to a research based institution. Many research grants were announced by Thumbay Foundation on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Thumbay Moideen, founder president and chairman of Board of Governors of the University thanked the Almighty, and rulers of this great country, especially His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of UAE and ruler of Abu Dhabi; His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum; vice-president & Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai; His Highness Sheikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ajman for their continuous encouragement and support. He congratulated the entire team and thanked them for their commitment towards the growth of the institution.
“We have a very dedicated and an experienced team to lead the research activities at the university”, says Prof Gita Ashok Raj, Provost of Gulf Medical University. This year the university has launched the Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences programme (35 seats per year) and the Bachelor of Health Sciences: BHS - Medical Laboratory Sciences (10 seats per year), BHS - Medical Imaging Sciences (10 seats per year), BHS - Anesthesia & Surgical Technology (10 seats per year), and BHS - Nursing Sciences (10 seats per year). BHS in Anesthesia & Surgical Technology is introduced for the first time in the country. All these programs have received Initial Accreditation from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, UAE. Admissions for the next academic year have already started”, she added.
Thumbay Foundation announces grant programme for medical research:
Thumbay Moideen announced grants for medical research for GMU faculty and students. This programme provides seed money to support bio-medical science, translational or clinical research projects. The proposals should be of high scientific caliber. The IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) from the projects will rest with the Gulf Medical University. 2 Professorial Research Grants of AED 50,000 each, 5 Faculty Research Grants of AED 25,000 each and 5 Student Research Fellowships of AED 5,000 each have been announced.
Research projects in the areas of Diabetes, Cardiovascular disease, Allergic Disorders, Genetic Disorders, and Haemoglobinopathies are being invited for submission. However, research projects in other areas of topical interest are welcome. The deadline for 2015 applications seed grants is 30 January 2015. Announcement of the grant recipients will be made on 28 February 2015.
